Anchored in the Impossible: Trusting the God Who Cannot Lie

“When God speaks, it stands—walk boldly in the promises sealed by His unchanging nature.”
Have you ever read a familiar passage of Scripture, and suddenly it hits differently, like a divine spark lighting up your spirit?
I've been going through a season, and it has been hard, heavy, and holy on so many levels. In my desperation, my consolation continues to be the Word, and at just the right time, my heart leaped for joy! Alas, His breath!
I've read this passage before, and heard it preached, but today, it hit 👊🏾 differently!
Don't you love it when the word of God drops you? The Spirit fine-tunes my heart, whereby I can receive the word afresh.
The Scripture 👉🏾 “So that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.” Hebrews 6:18.
When people read Hebrews chapter six, they often focus on the first impossible 👉🏾 “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit.” Hebrews 6:4.
We will concentrate on the second point here. However, I also want to take a moment to celebrate the completed work of our Lord Jesus. When He saved us, we were sealed, and nothing and no one can take us from the Father’s hand (not even us) or undo His finished work. God desires for us to live securely in His love!
“And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone
snatch them out of My hand.”
John 10:28.
Hebrews 6:4 isn't about born-again believers departing from the faith, but those who profess to be in Christ but do not possess eternal life in His name. People cannot use this verse to represent believers because the word impossible is used—it didn't say improbable. These people cannot be restored to the Faith because they rejected it.
Friends, this isn’t some small thing. They are drawn to the Faith but come short of being born again. They are enlightened but fall short of conversion. They partake as close as one can but are not indwelt by the Spirit; therefore, they are void of the communion we have with the Triune God. Thus rejecting the testimony of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, they cannot bear fruit, for they do not abide in the Vine. They came close but rejected the Gospel. They tasted but did not drink.
There is a big difference, and the writer of Hebrews makes the distinction by saying these very words about us ⤵️
“But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner.”
Hebrews 6:9. ( Boldface Italic mine)
Friend, we can trust God! Never allow anyone to tell you the work of Jesus is incomplete or that you can lose your salvation.
Salvation was never based on us but on the work of Jesus. We didn't do anything to earn it; it was by grace through faith in Him. Since we can't do anything to earn it, we cannot do anything to lose it because it isn't based on us, but Him.
Here is the thing: God knows the heart. Those who know Him, who he has saved—love Him, and we bear the fruit of God because we are the children of God. Sin no longer fits us; it doesn't mean we don't make mistakes, but we wouldn't dare trample the grace of our Lord Jesus. Therefore, we don't make a practice of sin.
We will read one last note from the apostle John, “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.” I John 2:19.
John makes it crystal clear that when apostasy occurs, it isn't believers but those who profess to be so.
Beloved, cling tightly to the Scriptures and pay attention to the pronouns. Often, there is a change in them, such as them/they versus us, for example, Hebrews 6:4, those who versus 6:9, you. It makes all the difference! We’ll come back to that and more on eternal security in a future post📌
However, I never want to miss an opportunity to ensure people are secure in the love of God displayed in what Jesus has done. Eternal security and eternal life are part of our inheritance!
Now… The Promises!
The writer of Hebrews wants us to mature in the faith, ensuring we press on by faith to inherit the promises, namely taking hold of Jesus, all that He is, and allowing His life to permeate our being through the Spirit fully. Every morsel of Scripture is impregnated with promise.
“And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith
and patience inherit the promises.”
Hebrews 6:11-12.
Friend, take your time and enjoy the Author’s embrace. Squeeze every morsel out. The seed being planted will indeed bear fruit in due time.
Let’s Talk About Impossible vs Improbable
The brain is a funny thing. Sometimes, we read impossible and mistake it for improbable, or at least act as such.
Impossible means “cannot.” —Absolute.
Improbable means “unlikely.”
The very word of God is truth. God is righteous and faithful and cannot deny Himself.
The context of this passage is vast! It is about blessing, particularly God’s promises. I am expectant of every promise our Lord gives, and I hope you are as well.
In the passage, the writer, inspired by the Spirit, references the promise given to Abraham:
“Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.”
Hebrews 6:14.
This was done intentionally so that readers at the time, including us now, would recognize the validity of God's word and understand the significance of the blessing.
This doesn’t mean everything feels perfect in the moment, but it is finished from God’s perspective. He knows the end from the beginning and stands outside of time. As His beloved children, we’re invited to believe Him fully. We can live expectantly, knowing the Lord delights in blessing us and multiplying what He’s entrusted to us as we walk in His ways. Even when life feels topsy-turvy, we have every reason to trust Him—we are living proof of His promise to Abraham!
“Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.”
Galatians 3:16.
“And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
Galatians 3:29.
Daddy God is the Promise Keeper! He is faithful! Therefore, since God said it, it is done! Since He cannot lie, what He says is the truth, and it holds friends, even when we don't see, feel, or experience it tangibly.
Consider when you go outside at noon, and the clouds hide the sun. You may not see its rays or feel its warmth, but it doesn't change the fact that the sun is shining. Well, the truth is more significant than fact! The truth is absolute! He does not change!
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Hebrews 13:8.
God has set us high in the Son. We cannot come down from the great work He is doing! Therefore, we are called to align our confession with what Christ has said. We do this by becoming people of His presence—relishing His Word, allowing it to penetrate our hearts, mixing faith with His promises, and holding fast to hope, knowing that God is faithful.
And the time is now! Many people are worried and anxious about the future, looking for anything to hold onto. May we be people who are witnesses to our hope in God. We are God's testimony before humanity, and His word is sure concerning us!
The consolations of God are strong enough to support his people under their heaviest trials.
—Matthew Henry.
The glorious Gospel anchors our hearts with a living hope. We stand in the promise and are filled with Him.
“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Hebrews 6:19-20.
Friend, don’t just read the promises—believe them, declare them, and anchor your soul. Let your life testify that our God is faithful, His Word is accurate, and His hope never fails. Today, choose to stand firm, trust deeply, and hope boldly in the One who cannot lie.
What would change in your life if you lived as though every promise of God is already fulfilled in Christ?
I intend to find out.
